Click on the links below to find out a little more on our subject areas Craft and Design Craft and Design is a Standard Grade course. It is the most similar to the work in S1 and S2. You will design small items, like clocks, mirrors and storage boxes. You produce design folios that include research, drawing of your designs and information about how to make products. Then the designs are made in the workshop. About half the time is spent in the classroom and half in the Workshop. You will also have opportunities to learn Computer Aided Design (CAD) and use the computer for design research and folio production. As well as learning about design, you learn about tools, materials, processes and manufacturing. Homework is set regularly and you are assessed on folio and practical work throughout the year. During S4 all students design and make a major project. Your final grade is based on this project and a standard grade exam. Classes in Craft and Design are mixed ability Credit, General and Foundation grade. Craft and Design is a good subject if you are interested in design, making projects and like to be creative.. Graphic Communication Graphic Communication is a Standard Grade course. You will learn a range of graphic skills like drawing, sketching and using the computer to produce graphics. About half you time is spent on the computer and half sketching and drawing.
You will learn different 2D and 3D techniques and over S3 and S4 will collect a folio of work together as part of your final grade. Graphic Communication is a skills based course and would suit you if you like to draw and use the computer to produce graphics... After Standard Grade you can continue to study Graphic Communication up to Higher level. We also offer Graphics at Intermediate 2 and Advanced Higher Practical Craft Skills is an Intermediate 1 and 2 course run over a two years in 3rd and 4th year. It can also be taught over one year in 5th or 6th year. If you prefer craft work to designing this is a good course to opt for as an alternative to Craft and Design. In Practical Craft Skills you will make several models in the workshop and learn a broad range of woodworking skills. As you progress you need to work more accurately to complete the models and pass the course. Though most of your time is spent in constructing projects, there are some short written tests and students must keep a diary to record what they have done. Some homework is also required.
